BACKGROUND

The PFRD was organized in 1949 when Filipino were first being made aware of disability and was reistered with the SEC on February 10, 1950.

PFRD virtually launched the rehabilitation movement in the philipines and provided a forum for the coordination of rehab activities nationwide. It became the first local organization to be admitted as an affiliate member of Tehabilitation International (RI), a federation of organizatios in more than 80 countries worldwide.

PFRD has the distinction of being the oldest non-governmental organization (NGO) that has worked for the last 67 years to address the needs of disabled persons.

MAJOR PROJECTS

A. MABINI AWARDS

The Apolinario Mabini Awards was launched by the Philippine Foundation for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled, Inc. (PFRD) in 1974 on the occasion of its Silver Anniversary. Since then, it has been a major annual program of the PFRD.

MOBILE

This intensive one-week, live-in training program is a collaborative undertaking among the DepEd, UP-Special Education Area and the PFRD that aims to train teachers, supervisors, community leaders and other groups handling children and youth with special educational needs.

COPING

A workshop seeks to train parents on how to cope with, effectively handle and communicate with their disabled children. More often than not parents are at a loss as to how they should correctly handle a child with earlier learning or physical disability. They are torn between feelings of overprotection and helplessness.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

NDPR Week was being observed during July 17 – 23 of the year which coincide to birthday of Apolinario Mabini, the “Sublime Paralytic”. PFRD was working together with the working committee composed of NGO’s and GO’s.
